Haiwei Dong received his PhD and Master degree from Kobe University (early graduation) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (enrollment through recommendation) in 2010 and 20081, respectively.

Biography

He is currently a Principal Researcher at Huawei Technologies Canada and an Adjunct Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Ottawa. He has held positions of Research Scientist in the University of Ottawa, Postdoctoral Fellow in New York University, Research Fellow of Young Scientist in Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS); Research Associate in the University of Toronto2; Science Technology Researcher in Japan Science and Technology Agency.

His research interests include artificial intelligence, multimedia communication, multimedia computing, and robotics. Haiwei serves as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Ottawa and has cosupervised 11 phd students, 20 master students, 6 undergraduate students3, 3 research assistants, and 7 interns. He also serves as an Associate Editor of IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine, a Column Editor of IEEE Multimedia and an Associated Editor of ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications.

He co-authored 92 academic papers, including 10 book chapters, 49 peer-reviewed journal papers, and 33 conference proceeding papers with over 2000 citations (h-index: 25, i10-index: 40) based on Google Scholar statistics.

He was invited to give presentations on his research work in many prestigious universities/institutes, including University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Chinese University of Hong Kong, McMaster University, King's College London, University of Heidelberg, German Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Swiss AI Lab IDSIA, etc.

His research projects were reported by many media, including New Scientist Magazine, Kobe Newspaper, uOttawa Gazette, etc.

He has received several awards, including Kobe Major Award of 12th Overseas Achievement Collections of Chinese People in Japan from Association of Chinese Alumni in Japan (2009)4; Kinoshita Scholarship from Kinoshita Memorial Foundation (2009); Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad from China Scholarship Council (2010)56 and Research Fellowship from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2010)7.
